GeForce GTS 250 512MB vs Radeon R9 M270X

Intro

The GeForce GTS 250 512MB features a core clock frequency of 738 MHz and a GDDR3 memory speed of 1100 MHz. It also makes use of a 256-bit memory bus, and makes use of a 65/55 nm design. It is comprised of 128 SPUs, 64 TAUs, and 16 ROPs.

Compare those specs to the Radeon R9 M270X, which comes with a core clock frequency of 725 MHz and a GDDR5 memory speed of 1125 MHz. It also uses a 128-bit memory bus, and makes use of a 28 nm design. It features 640 SPUs, 40 Texture Address Units, and 16 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

The Radeon R9 M270X should in theory perform a little bit faster than the GeForce GTS 250 512MB in general. (explain)

Radeon R9 M270X 72000 MB/sec
GeForce GTS 250 512MB 70400 MB/sec
Difference: 1600 (2%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GTS 250 512MB is much (more or less 63%) more effective at AF than the Radeon R9 M270X. (explain)

GeForce GTS 250 512MB 47232 Mtexels/sec
Radeon R9 M270X 29000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 18232 (63%)

Pixel Rate

The GeForce GTS 250 512MB should be just a bit (more or less 2%) better at AA than the Radeon R9 M270X, and also should be capable of handling higher resolutions better. (explain)

GeForce GTS 250 512MB 11808 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R9 M270X 11600 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 208 (2%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the largest amount of data (measured in megabytes per second) that can be transferred across the external memory interface in a second. The number is calculated by multiplying the bus width by the speed of its memory. If it uses DDR RAM, it must be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the bandwidth is, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are processed in one second. This is calculated by multiplying the total number of texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels the video card can possibly write to the local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is worked out by multiplying the number of Render Output Units by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel fill rate also depends on lots of other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the max fill rate.
