Radeon R9 M265X vs Radeon R9 M270X

Intro

The Radeon R9 M265X uses a 28 nm design. AMD has clocked the core frequency at 575 MHz. The GDDR5 RAM is set to run at a speed of 1125 MHz on this card. It features 640 SPUs along with 40 Texture Address Units and 16 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare all that to the Radeon R9 M270X, which has clock speeds of 725 MHz on the GPU, and 1125 MHz on the 2048 MB of GDDR5 RAM. It features 640 SPUs as well as 40 Texture Address Units and 16 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

Both cards have the exact same memory bandwidth, so theoretically they should perform the same. (explain)

Texel Rate

The Radeon R9 M270X is a lot (approximately 26%) better at AF than the Radeon R9 M265X. (explain)

Radeon R9 M270X 29000 Mtexels/sec
Radeon R9 M265X 23000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 6000 (26%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon R9 M270X should be much (more or less 26%) better at FSAA than the Radeon R9 M265X, and should be capable of handling higher resolutions without slowing down too much. (explain)

Radeon R9 M270X 11600 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R9 M265X 9200 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 2400 (26%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the max amount of data (counted in MB per second) that can be transported over the external memory interface in one second. It's calculated by multiplying the card's bus width by the speed of its memory. In the case of DDR memory, it must be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the card's memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that can be processed per second. This figure is calculated by multiplying the total texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the graphics card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels the video card can possibly record to its local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is calculated by multiplying the amount of colour ROPs by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel fill rate is also dependant on quite a few other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the maximum fill rate.
