Radeon HD 3690/3830 vs Radeon R7 M260X

Intro

The Radeon HD 3690/3830 makes use of a 55 nm design. AMD has set the core speed at 668 MHz. The GDDR3 RAM runs at a frequency of 828 MHz on this particular model. It features 320(64x5) SPUs along with 16 TAUs and 16 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare those specs to the Radeon R7 M260X, which has core clock speeds of 825 MHz on the GPU, and 1000 MHz on the 2048 MB of GDDR5 memory. It features 384 SPUs as well as 24 Texture Address Units and 8 Rasterization Operator Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the Radeon R7 M260X will be 142% faster than the Radeon HD 3690/3830 in general, due to its greater bandwidth. (explain)

Radeon R7 M260X 64000 MB/sec
Radeon HD 3690/3830 26496 MB/sec
Difference: 37504 (142%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon R7 M260X will be much (about 85%) better at texture filtering than the Radeon HD 3690/3830. (explain)

Radeon R7 M260X 19800 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 3690/3830 10688 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 9112 (85%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon HD 3690/3830 is quite a bit (about 62%) better at AA than the Radeon R7 M260X, and will be able to handle higher screen resolutions without losing too much performance. (explain)

Radeon HD 3690/3830 10688 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R7 M260X 6600 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 4088 (62%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the maximum amount of data (in units of megabytes per second) that can be transported across the external memory interface in a second. It is worked out by multiplying the card's bus width by its memory speed. If it uses DDR type RAM, it should be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the bandwidth is, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that are processed per second. This figure is worked out by multiplying the total amount of texture units by the core speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the graphics card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels that the graphics chip could possibly record to the local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is calculated by multiplying the number of Raster Operations Pipelines by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel rate also depends on lots of other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the max fill rate.
