Radeon HD 4730 vs Radeon R7 M260

Intro

The Radeon HD 4730 features a GPU clock speed of 700 MHz, and the 512 MB of GDDR5 memory is set to run at 900 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also is comprised of 640(128x5) Stream Processors, 32 Texture Address Units, and 8 Raster Operation Units.

Compare those specs to the Radeon R7 M260, which features a clock speed of 715 MHz and a DDR3 memory speed of 1000 MHz. It also makes use of a 64-bit memory bus, and makes use of a 28 nm design. It features 384 SPUs, 24 Texture Address Units, and 8 Raster Operation Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically speaking, the Radeon HD 4730 is 260% quicker than the Radeon R7 M260 in general, because of its greater bandwidth. (explain)

Radeon HD 4730 57600 MB/sec
Radeon R7 M260 16000 MB/sec
Difference: 41600 (260%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon HD 4730 should be quite a bit (approximately 31%) better at texture filtering than the Radeon R7 M260. (explain)

Radeon HD 4730 22400 Mtexels/sec
Radeon R7 M260 17160 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 5240 (31%)

Pixel Rate

If using high levels of AA is important to you, then the Radeon R7 M260 is superior to the Radeon HD 4730, but not by far. (explain)

Radeon R7 M260 5720 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 4730 5600 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 120 (2%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the largest amount of data (measured in MB per second) that can be moved past the external memory interface in one second. It is calculated by multiplying the card's bus width by the speed of its memory. In the case of DDR type memory, it must be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that are processed in one second. This is calculated by multiplying the total texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the video card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels the video card can possibly write to the local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is worked out by multiplying the number of ROPs by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel rate is also dependant on lots of other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the maximum fill rate.
