GeForce 8800 GT 1GB vs Radeon R5 M255

Intro

The GeForce 8800 GT 1GB uses a 65 nm design. nVidia has clocked the core speed at 600 MHz. The GDDR3 RAM is set to run at a speed of 900 MHz on this specific card. It features 112 SPUs along with 56 Texture Address Units and 16 ROPs.

Compare all of that to the Radeon R5 M255, which features core clock speeds of 940 MHz on the GPU, and 1000 MHz on the 2048 MB of DDR3 memory. It features 320 SPUs along with 20 Texture Address Units and 8 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the GeForce 8800 GT 1GB should perform quite a bit faster than the Radeon R5 M255 overall. (explain)

GeForce 8800 GT 1GB 57600 MB/sec
Radeon R5 M255 16000 MB/sec
Difference: 41600 (260%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce 8800 GT 1GB should be a lot (more or less 79%) better at texture filtering than the Radeon R5 M255. (explain)

GeForce 8800 GT 1GB 33600 Mtexels/sec
Radeon R5 M255 18800 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 14800 (79%)

Pixel Rate

The GeForce 8800 GT 1GB will be quite a bit (more or less 28%) more effective at full screen anti-aliasing than the Radeon R5 M255, and also will be able to handle higher screen resolutions better. (explain)

GeForce 8800 GT 1GB 9600 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R5 M255 7520 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 2080 (28%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the max amount of information (measured in MB per second) that can be transported over the external memory interface in a second. The number is worked out by multiplying the interface width by the speed of its memory. If it uses DDR RAM, it must be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are applied in one second. This number is calculated by multiplying the total amount of texture units by the core speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the video card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels that the graphics chip can possibly write to the local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is calculated by multiplying the amount of Raster Operations Pipelines by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel rate is also dependant on quite a few other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the max fill rate.
