GeForce 9500 GT 512MB GDDR3 vs Radeon R5 M255

Intro

The GeForce 9500 GT 512MB GDDR3 makes use of a 55 nm design. nVidia has set the core speed at 550 MHz. The GDDR3 RAM works at a speed of 800 MHz on this specific card. It features 32 SPUs along with 16 TAUs and 8 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare those specs to the Radeon R5 M255, which comes with GPU clock speed of 940 MHz, and 2048 MB of DDR3 memory running at 1000 MHz through a 64-bit bus. It also is made up of 320 SPUs, 20 TAUs, and 8 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the GeForce 9500 GT 512MB GDDR3 should be much faster than the Radeon R5 M255 in general. (explain)

GeForce 9500 GT 512MB GDDR3 25600 MB/sec
Radeon R5 M255 16000 MB/sec
Difference: 9600 (60%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon R5 M255 will be quite a bit (about 114%) better at AF than the GeForce 9500 GT 512MB GDDR3. (explain)

Radeon R5 M255 18800 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 9500 GT 512MB GDDR3 8800 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 10000 (114%)

Pixel Rate

If using lots of anti-aliasing is important to you, then the Radeon R5 M255 is the winner, by a large margin. (explain)

Radeon R5 M255 7520 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 9500 GT 512MB GDDR3 4400 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 3120 (71%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the maximum amount of data (in units of MB per second) that can be transferred across the external memory interface in a second. It is worked out by multiplying the card's interface width by the speed of its memory. In the case of DDR type memory, it must be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the bandwidth is, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that are processed in one second. This number is worked out by multiplying the total texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the video card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels the graphics card can possibly record to the local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is worked out by multiplying the number of ROPs by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel rate also depends on lots of other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the max fill rate.
