Radeon HD 3850 512MB vs Radeon R5 M255

Intro

The Radeon HD 3850 512MB features a clock frequency of 668 MHz and a GDDR3 memory speed of 828 MHz. It also features a 256-bit memory bus, and uses a 55 nm design. It is comprised of 320(64x5) SPUs, 16 TAUs, and 16 Raster Operation Units.

Compare all of that to the Radeon R5 M255, which has GPU clock speed of 940 MHz, and 2048 MB of DDR3 memory set to run at 1000 MHz through a 64-bit bus. It also is made up of 320 Stream Processors, 20 TAUs, and 8 Raster Operation Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the Radeon HD 3850 512MB will be 231% quicker than the Radeon R5 M255 overall, because of its greater data rate. (explain)

Radeon HD 3850 512MB 52992 MB/sec
Radeon R5 M255 16000 MB/sec
Difference: 36992 (231%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon R5 M255 is much (about 76%) better at AF than the Radeon HD 3850 512MB. (explain)

Radeon R5 M255 18800 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 3850 512MB 10688 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 8112 (76%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon HD 3850 512MB should be quite a bit (more or less 42%) faster with regards to anti-aliasing than the Radeon R5 M255, and also able to handle higher screen resolutions without slowing down too much. (explain)

Radeon HD 3850 512MB 10688 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R5 M255 7520 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 3168 (42%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the max amount of information (measured in MB per second) that can be transferred past the external memory interface in one second. It's calculated by multiplying the bus width by the speed of its memory. If the card has DDR type RAM, it must be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the card's memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that can be processed in one second. This is worked out by multiplying the total number of texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels that the graphics card can possibly write to the local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is calculated by multiplying the amount of ROPs by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel output rate is also dependant on many other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the max fill rate.
