Radeon HD 4730 vs Radeon R5 M255

Intro

The Radeon HD 4730 makes use of a 55 nm design. AMD has set the core frequency at 700 MHz. The GDDR5 memory is set to run at a frequency of 900 MHz on this card. It features 640(128x5) SPUs along with 32 TAUs and 8 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare all of that to the Radeon R5 M255, which comes with core clock speeds of 940 MHz on the GPU, and 1000 MHz on the 2048 MB of DDR3 RAM. It features 320 SPUs along with 20 TAUs and 8 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically speaking, the Radeon HD 4730 will be 260% quicker than the Radeon R5 M255 overall, because of its higher bandwidth. (explain)

Radeon HD 4730 57600 MB/sec
Radeon R5 M255 16000 MB/sec
Difference: 41600 (260%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon HD 4730 should be a little bit (more or less 19%) better at AF than the Radeon R5 M255. (explain)

Radeon HD 4730 22400 Mtexels/sec
Radeon R5 M255 18800 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 3600 (19%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon R5 M255 will be quite a bit (about 34%) faster with regards to FSAA than the Radeon HD 4730, and also able to handle higher screen resolutions without slowing down too much. (explain)

Radeon R5 M255 7520 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 4730 5600 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 1920 (34%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the maximum amount of information (measured in megabytes per second) that can be transferred past the external memory interface within a second. It is calculated by multiplying the interface width by the speed of its memory. If the card has DDR memory, the result should be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the bandwidth is, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are processed in one second. This number is worked out by multiplying the total number of texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels the graphics card can possibly write to the local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is worked out by multiplying the number of Render Output Units by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel fill rate also depends on quite a few other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the maximum fill rate.
