GeForce GTS 450 1GB vs Radeon R5 M255

Intro

The GeForce GTS 450 1GB has a GPU core clock speed of 783 MHz, and the 1024 MB of GDDR5 memory is set to run at 902 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also is comprised of 192 SPUs, 32 TAUs, and 16 Raster Operation Units.

Compare all that to the Radeon R5 M255, which makes use of a 28 nm design. AMD has clocked the core speed at 940 MHz. The DDR3 memory runs at a frequency of 1000 MHz on this particular model. It features 320 SPUs as well as 20 TAUs and 8 Rasterization Operator Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically speaking, the GeForce GTS 450 1GB is 261% quicker than the Radeon R5 M255 in general, because of its higher bandwidth. (explain)

GeForce GTS 450 1GB 57728 MB/sec
Radeon R5 M255 16000 MB/sec
Difference: 41728 (261%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GTS 450 1GB is much (about 33%) faster with regards to texture filtering than the Radeon R5 M255. (explain)

GeForce GTS 450 1GB 25056 Mtexels/sec
Radeon R5 M255 18800 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 6256 (33%)

Pixel Rate

The GeForce GTS 450 1GB should be much (approximately 67%) better at full screen anti-aliasing than the Radeon R5 M255, and also capable of handling higher screen resolutions without slowing down too much. (explain)

GeForce GTS 450 1GB 12528 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R5 M255 7520 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 5008 (67%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the largest amount of data (in units of megabytes per second) that can be moved past the external memory interface in one second. It's worked out by multiplying the bus width by its memory speed. If it uses DDR RAM, the result should be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that are applied in one second. This figure is worked out by multiplying the total number of texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the video card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels the graphics card can possibly record to the local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is calculated by multiplying the amount of ROPs by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel rate also depends on many other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the maximum fill rate.
