GeForce 930M vs Radeon R5 M255

Intro

The GeForce 930M comes with core clock speeds of 928 MHz on the GPU, and 900 MHz on the 2048 MB of DDR3 memory. It features 384 SPUs along with 24 Texture Address Units and 8 ROPs.

Compare all that to the Radeon R5 M255, which features GPU clock speed of 940 MHz, and 2048 MB of DDR3 memory set to run at 1000 MHz through a 64-bit bus. It also is comprised of 320 Stream Processors, 20 TAUs, and 8 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically speaking, the Radeon R5 M255 will be 11% quicker than the GeForce 930M overall, because of its higher data rate. (explain)

Radeon R5 M255 16000 MB/sec
GeForce 930M 14400 MB/sec
Difference: 1600 (11%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce 930M should be just a bit (about 18%) faster with regards to AF than the Radeon R5 M255. (explain)

GeForce 930M 22272 Mtexels/sec
Radeon R5 M255 18800 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 3472 (18%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon R5 M255 will be just a bit (more or less 1%) more effective at AA than the GeForce 930M, and also will be able to handle higher resolutions better. (explain)

Radeon R5 M255 7520 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 930M 7424 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 96 (1%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the largest amount of information (measured in megabytes per second) that can be moved over the external memory interface within a second. It is calculated by multiplying the card's bus width by the speed of its memory. If the card has DDR type memory, it should be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the bandwidth is, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that can be applied in one second. This number is calculated by multiplying the total amount of texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the graphics card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels that the graphics card could possibly write to the local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is calculated by multiplying the amount of Render Output Units by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel rate is also dependant on lots of other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the max fill rate.
