GeForce 930M vs Radeon R5 M255

Intro

The GeForce 930M has a GPU core speed of 928 MHz, and the 2048 MB of DDR3 memory is set to run at 900 MHz through a 64-bit bus. It also is comprised of 384 SPUs, 24 Texture Address Units, and 8 ROPs.

Compare all of that to the Radeon R5 M255, which has core clock speeds of 940 MHz on the GPU, and 1000 MHz on the 2048 MB of DDR3 memory. It features 320 SPUs as well as 20 TAUs and 8 Rasterization Operator Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the Radeon R5 M255 is 11% quicker than the GeForce 930M overall, due to its higher data rate. (explain)

Radeon R5 M255 16000 MB/sec
GeForce 930M 14400 MB/sec
Difference: 1600 (11%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce 930M will be a bit (more or less 18%) better at anisotropic filtering than the Radeon R5 M255. (explain)

GeForce 930M 22272 Mtexels/sec
Radeon R5 M255 18800 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 3472 (18%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon R5 M255 will be just a bit (about 1%) better at FSAA than the GeForce 930M, and should be capable of handling higher resolutions better. (explain)

Radeon R5 M255 7520 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 930M 7424 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 96 (1%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the largest amount of data (measured in MB per second) that can be moved across the external memory interface in a second. It's calculated by multiplying the interface width by its memory clock speed. If it uses DDR type memory, it must be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the card's memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that can be processed in one second. This is worked out by multiplying the total number of texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the graphics card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels the video card can possibly record to the local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is calculated by multiplying the amount of colour ROPs by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel rate is also dependant on many other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the maximum fill rate.
