GeForce 930M vs Radeon R5 M255

Intro

The GeForce 930M features clock speeds of 928 MHz on the GPU, and 900 MHz on the 2048 MB of DDR3 memory. It features 384 SPUs along with 24 TAUs and 8 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare those specs to the Radeon R5 M255, which has GPU clock speed of 940 MHz, and 2048 MB of DDR3 memory running at 1000 MHz through a 64-bit bus. It also is comprised of 320 Stream Processors, 20 Texture Address Units, and 8 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

The Radeon R5 M255 should in theory perform a little bit faster than the GeForce 930M in general. (explain)

Radeon R5 M255 16000 MB/sec
GeForce 930M 14400 MB/sec
Difference: 1600 (11%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce 930M will be a small bit (more or less 18%) better at AF than the Radeon R5 M255. (explain)

GeForce 930M 22272 Mtexels/sec
Radeon R5 M255 18800 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 3472 (18%)

Pixel Rate

If running with a high screen resolution is important to you, then the Radeon R5 M255 is a better choice, but it probably won't make a huge difference. (explain)

Radeon R5 M255 7520 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 930M 7424 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 96 (1%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the maximum amount of information (counted in MB per second) that can be transported over the external memory interface in one second. The number is worked out by multiplying the interface width by its memory speed. If it uses DDR RAM, it should be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the card's memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that can be applied per second. This number is worked out by multiplying the total texture units by the core speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels the video card could possibly record to the local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is worked out by multiplying the number of colour ROPs by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel fill rate is also dependant on many other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the maximum fill rate.
