GeForce GTX 950M vs Radeon R5 M255

Intro

The GeForce GTX 950M comes with a GPU core speed of 914 MHz, and the 2048 MB of DDR3 memory runs at 1000 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also is comprised of 640 SPUs, 40 TAUs, and 16 Raster Operation Units.

Compare all that to the Radeon R5 M255, which comes with core clock speeds of 940 MHz on the GPU, and 1000 MHz on the 2048 MB of DDR3 RAM. It features 320 SPUs along with 20 TAUs and 8 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the GeForce GTX 950M should be quite a bit faster than the Radeon R5 M255 overall. (explain)

GeForce GTX 950M 32000 MB/sec
Radeon R5 M255 16000 MB/sec
Difference: 16000 (100%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GTX 950M should be a lot (approximately 94%) more effective at AF than the Radeon R5 M255. (explain)

GeForce GTX 950M 36560 Mtexels/sec
Radeon R5 M255 18800 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 17760 (94%)

Pixel Rate

The GeForce GTX 950M should be quite a bit (approximately 94%) faster with regards to anti-aliasing than the Radeon R5 M255, and should be capable of handling higher resolutions without slowing down too much. (explain)

GeForce GTX 950M 14624 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R5 M255 7520 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 7104 (94%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the max amount of data (counted in MB per second) that can be transferred past the external memory interface within a second. It is calculated by multiplying the bus width by the speed of its memory. In the case of DDR type memory, it must be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are applied in one second. This is worked out by multiplying the total texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels the video card could possibly record to the local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is worked out by multiplying the number of colour ROPs by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel rate also depends on lots of other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the maximum fill rate.
