GeForce 8600 GT 512MB DDR2 vs Radeon R5 M230

Intro

The GeForce 8600 GT 512MB DDR2 comes with core clock speeds of 540 MHz on the GPU, and 400 MHz on the 512 MB of DDR2 RAM. It features 32 SPUs along with 16 Texture Address Units and 8 ROPs.

Compare those specs to the Radeon R5 M230, which comes with GPU core speed of 780 MHz, and 2048 MB of DDR3 memory running at 1000 MHz through a 64-bit bus. It also features 320 SPUs, 20 TAUs, and 4 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically, the Radeon R5 M230 should be quite a bit faster than the GeForce 8600 GT 512MB DDR2 overall. (explain)

Radeon R5 M230 16000 MB/sec
GeForce 8600 GT 512MB DDR2 12800 MB/sec
Difference: 3200 (25%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon R5 M230 should be quite a bit (more or less 81%) faster with regards to AF than the GeForce 8600 GT 512MB DDR2. (explain)

Radeon R5 M230 15600 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 8600 GT 512MB DDR2 8640 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 6960 (81%)

Pixel Rate

If running with a high resolution is important to you, then the GeForce 8600 GT 512MB DDR2 is a better choice, by far. (explain)

GeForce 8600 GT 512MB DDR2 4320 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R5 M230 3120 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 1200 (38%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the max amount of data (measured in megabytes per second) that can be transported across the external memory interface in one second. It's calculated by multiplying the interface width by the speed of its memory. In the case of DDR type RAM, it should be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the card's memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that can be applied per second. This number is calculated by multiplying the total texture units by the core speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the video card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels the graphics card could possibly record to the local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is worked out by multiplying the number of colour ROPs by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel rate is also dependant on quite a few other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the maximum fill rate.
