GeForce GTX 970M vs Radeon HD 3690/3830

Intro

The GeForce GTX 970M has a core clock frequency of 924 MHz and a GDDR5 memory frequency of 1000 MHz. It also features a 192-bit memory bus, and makes use of a 28 nm design. It is made up of 1280 SPUs, 80 TAUs, and 48 Raster Operation Units.

Compare those specs to the Radeon HD 3690/3830, which has core speeds of 668 MHz on the GPU, and 828 MHz on the 256 MB of GDDR3 RAM. It features 320(64x5) SPUs along with 16 Texture Address Units and 16 Rasterization Operator Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Both cards have the same power consumption.

Memory Bandwidth

As far as performance goes, the GeForce GTX 970M should in theory be a lot superior to the Radeon HD 3690/3830 in general. (explain)

GeForce GTX 970M 96000 MB/sec
Radeon HD 3690/3830 26496 MB/sec
Difference: 69504 (262%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GTX 970M is quite a bit (more or less 592%) better at texture filtering than the Radeon HD 3690/3830. (explain)

GeForce GTX 970M 73920 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 3690/3830 10688 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 63232 (592%)

Pixel Rate

If running with a high resolution is important to you, then the GeForce GTX 970M is a better choice, by far. (explain)

GeForce GTX 970M 44352 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 3690/3830 10688 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 33664 (315%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the largest amount of data (in units of megabytes per second) that can be transferred past the external memory interface within a second. The number is calculated by multiplying the interface width by the speed of its memory. If it uses DDR type RAM, it should be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the card's memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are processed per second. This figure is worked out by multiplying the total amount of texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels that the graphics chip could possibly write to its local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is calculated by multiplying the amount of colour ROPs by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel output rate also depends on lots of other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the maximum fill rate.
