GeForce GTX 965M vs Radeon HD 4770

Intro

The GeForce GTX 965M has core clock speeds of 944 MHz on the GPU, and 1000 MHz on the 2048 MB of GDDR5 RAM. It features 1024 SPUs as well as 64 Texture Address Units and 32 ROPs.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon HD 4770, which comes with a GPU core clock speed of 750 MHz, and 512 MB of GDDR5 RAM running at 800 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also is made up of 640(128x5) Stream Processors, 32 Texture Address Units, and 16 Raster Operation Units.

GeForce GTX 965M 60 Watts
Radeon HD 4770 80 Watts
Difference: 20 Watts (33%)

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically, the GeForce GTX 965M should be much faster than the Radeon HD 4770 in general. (explain)

GeForce GTX 965M 64000 MB/sec
Radeon HD 4770 51200 MB/sec
Difference: 12800 (25%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GTX 965M will be a lot (approximately 152%) faster with regards to AF than the Radeon HD 4770. (explain)

GeForce GTX 965M 60416 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 4770 24000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 36416 (152%)

Pixel Rate

If running with high levels of AA is important to you, then the GeForce GTX 965M is superior to the Radeon HD 4770, and very much so. (explain)

GeForce GTX 965M 30208 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 4770 12000 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 18208 (152%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the maximum amount of data (in units of MB per second) that can be transported past the external memory interface in a second. The number is calculated by multiplying the card's bus width by its memory clock speed. If it uses DDR type memory, the result should be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the bandwidth is, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that are applied per second. This figure is worked out by multiplying the total texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels that the graphics card can possibly write to the local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is calculated by multiplying the number of Render Output Units by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel rate also depends on lots of other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the maximum fill rate.
