GeForce GTX 965M vs Radeon HD 4850 2GB

Intro

The GeForce GTX 965M has a GPU core speed of 944 MHz, and the 2048 MB of GDDR5 memory runs at 1000 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also is made up of 1024 SPUs, 64 Texture Address Units, and 32 ROPs.

Compare that to the Radeon HD 4850 2GB, which has GPU clock speed of 625 MHz, and 2048 MB of GDDR4 RAM set to run at 993 MHz through a 256-bit bus. It also features 800(160x5) Stream Processors, 40 Texture Address Units, and 16 ROPs.

GeForce GTX 965M 64000 MB/sec
Radeon HD 4850 2GB 63552 MB/sec
Difference: 448 (1%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GTX 965M is a lot (approximately 142%) better at texture filtering than the Radeon HD 4850 2GB. (explain)

GeForce GTX 965M 60416 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 4850 2GB 25000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 35416 (142%)

Pixel Rate

The GeForce GTX 965M is quite a bit (approximately 202%) better at anti-aliasing than the Radeon HD 4850 2GB, and should be capable of handling higher resolutions better. (explain)

GeForce GTX 965M 30208 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 4850 2GB 10000 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 20208 (202%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the maximum amount of information (in units of megabytes per second) that can be moved across the external memory interface in a second. It is worked out by multiplying the bus width by its memory speed. If the card has DDR RAM, it must be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that can be processed per second. This number is worked out by multiplying the total texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the video card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels the video card could possibly record to its local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is worked out by multiplying the number of Render Output Units by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel output rate is also dependant on quite a few other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the maximum fill rate.
