GeForce GT 315 vs GeForce GTX 965M

Intro

The GeForce GT 315 has a core clock frequency of 625 MHz and a DDR3 memory speed of 790 MHz. It also features a 128-bit bus, and uses a 40 nm design. It is made up of 48 SPUs, 16 Texture Address Units, and 8 Raster Operation Units.

Compare all of that to the GeForce GTX 965M, which has a clock speed of 944 MHz and a GDDR5 memory frequency of 1000 MHz. It also features a 128-bit bus, and makes use of a 28 nm design. It is made up of 1024 SPUs, 64 TAUs, and 32 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

GeForce GT 315 52 Watts
GeForce GTX 965M 60 Watts
Difference: 8 Watts (15%)

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically speaking, the GeForce GTX 965M should be 153% faster than the GeForce GT 315 overall, due to its higher bandwidth. (explain)

GeForce GTX 965M 64000 MB/sec
GeForce GT 315 25280 MB/sec
Difference: 38720 (153%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GTX 965M should be a lot (more or less 504%) better at texture filtering than the GeForce GT 315. (explain)

GeForce GTX 965M 60416 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GT 315 10000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 50416 (504%)

Pixel Rate

If using lots of anti-aliasing is important to you, then the GeForce GTX 965M is the winner, by far. (explain)

GeForce GTX 965M 30208 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GT 315 5000 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 25208 (504%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the max amount of data (measured in megabytes per second) that can be transferred past the external memory interface within a second. It's worked out by multiplying the interface width by its memory speed. If it uses DDR type RAM, it must be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the card's memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that are applied in one second. This figure is calculated by multiplying the total amount of texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the graphics card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels that the graphics card can possibly record to the local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is worked out by multiplying the amount of ROPs by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel fill rate is also dependant on many other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the maximum fill rate.
