GeForce GTX 965M vs Radeon HD 5570

Intro

The GeForce GTX 965M features a clock frequency of 944 MHz and a GDDR5 memory frequency of 1000 MHz. It also makes use of a 128-bit bus, and makes use of a 28 nm design. It is comprised of 1024 SPUs, 64 Texture Address Units, and 32 ROPs.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon HD 5570, which comes with a core clock speed of 650 MHz and a DDR3 memory frequency of 900 MHz. It also makes use of a 128-bit bus, and uses a 40 nm design. It is comprised of 400(80x5) SPUs, 20 Texture Address Units, and 8 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

Radeon HD 5570 43 Watts
GeForce GTX 965M 60 Watts
Difference: 17 Watts (40%)

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the GeForce GTX 965M should perform a lot faster than the Radeon HD 5570 in general. (explain)

GeForce GTX 965M 64000 MB/sec
Radeon HD 5570 28800 MB/sec
Difference: 35200 (122%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GTX 965M should be quite a bit (approximately 365%) more effective at anisotropic filtering than the Radeon HD 5570. (explain)

GeForce GTX 965M 60416 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 5570 13000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 47416 (365%)

Pixel Rate

If running with a high screen resolution is important to you, then the GeForce GTX 965M is the winner, and very much so. (explain)

GeForce GTX 965M 30208 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 5570 5200 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 25008 (481%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the largest amount of information (measured in MB per second) that can be moved over the external memory interface within a second. The number is calculated by multiplying the interface width by the speed of its memory. If it uses DDR type memory, it must be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the bandwidth is, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that are applied per second. This is worked out by multiplying the total number of texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels that the graphics chip can possibly record to the local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is worked out by multiplying the amount of ROPs by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel output rate also depends on quite a few other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the maximum fill rate.
