GeForce GTX 965M vs Radeon HD 7790

Intro

The GeForce GTX 965M comes with a GPU core speed of 944 MHz, and the 2048 MB of GDDR5 memory runs at 1000 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also is made up of 1024 Stream Processors, 64 Texture Address Units, and 32 Raster Operation Units.

Compare those specs to the Radeon HD 7790, which has core clock speeds of 1000 MHz on the GPU, and 1500 MHz on the 1024 MB of GDDR5 memory. It features 896 SPUs as well as 56 Texture Address Units and 16 Rasterization Operator Units.

Radeon HD 7790 96000 MB/sec
GeForce GTX 965M 64000 MB/sec
Difference: 32000 (50%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GTX 965M should be just a bit (approximately 8%) better at texture filtering than the Radeon HD 7790. (explain)

GeForce GTX 965M 60416 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 7790 56000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 4416 (8%)

Pixel Rate

The GeForce GTX 965M is quite a bit (approximately 89%) better at FSAA than the Radeon HD 7790, and should be capable of handling higher resolutions better. (explain)

GeForce GTX 965M 30208 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 7790 16000 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 14208 (89%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the largest amount of information (in units of MB per second) that can be moved over the external memory interface in one second. The number is worked out by multiplying the interface width by its memory speed. If the card has DDR type RAM, the result should be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the card's memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that can be applied per second. This number is worked out by multiplying the total amount of texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels the video card could possibly write to the local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is calculated by multiplying the number of Render Output Units by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel output rate is also dependant on lots of other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the max fill rate.
