GeForce 9800 GT 512MB vs GeForce GTX 950M

Intro

The GeForce 9800 GT 512MB features a GPU clock speed of 600 MHz, and the 512 MB of GDDR3 RAM runs at 900 MHz through a 256-bit bus. It also is made up of 112 SPUs, 56 TAUs, and 16 Raster Operation Units.

Compare all of that to the GeForce GTX 950M, which features a clock frequency of 914 MHz and a DDR3 memory speed of 1000 MHz. It also makes use of a 128-bit memory bus, and uses a 28 nm design. It is comprised of 640 SPUs, 40 TAUs, and 16 Raster Operation Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

GeForce GTX 950M 55 Watts
GeForce 9800 GT 512MB 105 Watts
Difference: 50 Watts (91%)

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically speaking, the GeForce 9800 GT 512MB is 80% faster than the GeForce GTX 950M in general, due to its greater data rate. (explain)

GeForce 9800 GT 512MB 57600 MB/sec
GeForce GTX 950M 32000 MB/sec
Difference: 25600 (80%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GTX 950M should be a small bit (about 9%) better at AF than the GeForce 9800 GT 512MB. (explain)

GeForce GTX 950M 36560 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 9800 GT 512MB 33600 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 2960 (9%)

Pixel Rate

The GeForce GTX 950M should be quite a bit (about 52%) more effective at anti-aliasing than the GeForce 9800 GT 512MB, and able to handle higher screen resolutions more effectively. (explain)

GeForce GTX 950M 14624 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 9800 GT 512MB 9600 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 5024 (52%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the maximum amount of information (in units of MB per second) that can be transported across the external memory interface within a second. The number is calculated by multiplying the card's bus width by its memory clock speed. In the case of DDR RAM, the result should be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the card's memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that are processed per second. This figure is calculated by multiplying the total texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the video card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels that the graphics card can possibly write to its local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is worked out by multiplying the amount of ROPs by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel output rate is also dependant on quite a few other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the maximum fill rate.
