GeForce GTX 950M vs Radeon HD 5450

Intro

The GeForce GTX 950M uses a 28 nm design. nVidia has set the core frequency at 914 MHz. The DDR3 RAM runs at a frequency of 1000 MHz on this specific card. It features 640 SPUs as well as 40 TAUs and 16 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare all of that to the Radeon HD 5450, which has GPU core speed of 650 MHz, and 512 MB of DDR3 memory set to run at 800 MHz through a 64-bit bus. It also is comprised of 80(16x5) Stream Processors, 8 TAUs, and 4 Raster Operation Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

Radeon HD 5450 19 Watts
GeForce GTX 950M 55 Watts
Difference: 36 Watts (189%)

Memory Bandwidth

The GeForce GTX 950M should theoretically perform much faster than the Radeon HD 5450 in general. (explain)

GeForce GTX 950M 32000 MB/sec
Radeon HD 5450 12800 MB/sec
Difference: 19200 (150%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GTX 950M should be a lot (about 603%) more effective at AF than the Radeon HD 5450. (explain)

GeForce GTX 950M 36560 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 5450 5200 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 31360 (603%)

Pixel Rate

If using a high screen resolution is important to you, then the GeForce GTX 950M is the winner, by far. (explain)

GeForce GTX 950M 14624 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 5450 2600 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 12024 (462%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the max amount of data (in units of megabytes per second) that can be transferred across the external memory interface in one second. The number is calculated by multiplying the bus width by its memory clock speed. If it uses DDR RAM, it should be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the card's memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that are applied in one second. This number is calculated by multiplying the total number of texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels the video card could possibly write to its local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is calculated by multiplying the number of colour ROPs by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel rate also depends on lots of other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the max fill rate.
