GeForce 8600 GS (OEM) vs GeForce 940M

Intro

The GeForce 8600 GS (OEM) features core clock speeds of 540 MHz on the GPU, and 400 MHz on the 256 MB of DDR2 RAM. It features 32 SPUs along with 16 TAUs and 8 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare all that to the GeForce 940M, which has a clock frequency of 1072 MHz and a DDR3 memory frequency of 1000 MHz. It also uses a 64-bit memory bus, and uses a 28 nm design. It is made up of 384 SPUs, 24 TAUs, and 8 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically speaking, the GeForce 940M should perform much faster than the GeForce 8600 GS (OEM) in general. (explain)

GeForce 940M 16000 MB/sec
GeForce 8600 GS (OEM) 12800 MB/sec
Difference: 3200 (25%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce 940M is a lot (approximately 198%) better at AF than the GeForce 8600 GS (OEM). (explain)

GeForce 940M 25728 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 8600 GS (OEM) 8640 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 17088 (198%)

Pixel Rate

The GeForce 940M should be quite a bit (more or less 99%) better at anti-aliasing than the GeForce 8600 GS (OEM), and also will be able to handle higher screen resolutions more effectively. (explain)

GeForce 940M 8576 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 8600 GS (OEM) 4320 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 4256 (99%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the maximum amount of data (measured in megabytes per second) that can be transferred past the external memory interface in a second. It's worked out by multiplying the bus width by its memory clock speed. If it uses DDR memory, it should be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the card's memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that can be processed in one second. This is worked out by multiplying the total amount of texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the graphics card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels the video card could possibly record to its local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is worked out by multiplying the amount of ROPs by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel output rate also depends on quite a few other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the maximum fill rate.
