GeForce 930M vs Radeon HD 4870 2GB

Intro

The GeForce 930M makes use of a 28 nm design. nVidia has set the core frequency at 928 MHz. The DDR3 RAM is set to run at a frequency of 900 MHz on this specific card. It features 384 SPUs as well as 24 Texture Address Units and 8 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare all of that to the Radeon HD 4870 2GB, which comes with a core clock speed of 750 MHz and a GDDR5 memory speed of 900 MHz. It also uses a 256-bit bus, and makes use of a 55 nm design. It features 800(160x5) SPUs, 40 Texture Address Units, and 16 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically, the Radeon HD 4870 2GB should perform much faster than the GeForce 930M overall. (explain)

Radeon HD 4870 2GB 115200 MB/sec
GeForce 930M 14400 MB/sec
Difference: 100800 (700%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon HD 4870 2GB should be a lot (approximately 35%) faster with regards to anisotropic filtering than the GeForce 930M. (explain)

Radeon HD 4870 2GB 30000 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 930M 22272 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 7728 (35%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon HD 4870 2GB should be a lot (about 62%) faster with regards to anti-aliasing than the GeForce 930M, and should be capable of handling higher resolutions without losing too much performance. (explain)

Radeon HD 4870 2GB 12000 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 930M 7424 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 4576 (62%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the largest amount of information (in units of MB per second) that can be transferred over the external memory interface in a second. It's calculated by multiplying the card's interface width by its memory clock speed. If the card has DDR type RAM, the result should be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the bandwidth is, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that can be processed in one second. This figure is worked out by multiplying the total number of texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels the graphics card could possibly record to the local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is calculated by multiplying the amount of Render Output Units by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel output rate also depends on quite a few other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the maximum fill rate.
