GeForce GTX 580 vs GeForce GTX 950

Intro

The GeForce GTX 580 has a GPU core clock speed of 772 MHz, and the 1536 MB of GDDR5 RAM is set to run at 1002 MHz through a 384-bit bus. It also is comprised of 512 Stream Processors, 64 TAUs, and 48 ROPs.

Compare all of that to the GeForce GTX 950, which has a clock frequency of 1024 MHz and a GDDR5 memory speed of 1652 MHz. It also features a 128-bit memory bus, and uses a 28 nm design. It is made up of 768 SPUs, 48 Texture Address Units, and 32 Raster Operation Units.

Benchmarks

These are real-world performance benchmarks that were submitted by Hardware Compare users. The scores seen here are the average of all benchmarks submitted for each respective test and hardware.

3DMark Fire Strike Graphics Score

GeForce GTX 950 6536 points
GeForce GTX 580 4956 points
Difference: 1580 (32%)

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

GeForce GTX 950 90 Watts
GeForce GTX 580 244 Watts
Difference: 154 Watts (171%)

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically, the GeForce GTX 580 should perform a lot faster than the GeForce GTX 950 in general. (explain)

GeForce GTX 580 192384 MB/sec
GeForce GTX 950 105728 MB/sec
Difference: 86656 (82%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GTX 580 is just a bit (about 1%) more effective at anisotropic filtering than the GeForce GTX 950. (explain)

GeForce GTX 580 49408 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GTX 950 49152 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 256 (1%)

Pixel Rate

If running with lots of anti-aliasing is important to you, then the GeForce GTX 580 is superior to the GeForce GTX 950, though only just barely. (explain)

GeForce GTX 580 37056 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GTX 950 32768 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 4288 (13%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the largest amount of information (counted in MB per second) that can be transported over the external memory interface in one second. It is calculated by multiplying the bus width by the speed of its memory. If it uses DDR RAM, it should be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that are applied in one second. This is calculated by multiplying the total number of texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels the graphics card could possibly record to the local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is calculated by multiplying the amount of colour ROPs by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel rate is also dependant on many other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the maximum fill rate.
