GeForce GT 340 vs Radeon R9 380 4G

Intro

The GeForce GT 340 has a clock frequency of 550 MHz and a GDDR5 memory frequency of 850 MHz. It also makes use of a 128-bit bus, and uses a 40 nm design. It is made up of 96 SPUs, 32 TAUs, and 8 Raster Operation Units.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon R9 380 4G, which has a core clock frequency of 970 MHz and a GDDR5 memory speed of 1425 MHz. It also makes use of a 256-bit memory bus, and uses a 28 nm design. It is made up of 1792 SPUs, 112 TAUs, and 32 ROPs.

Memory Bandwidth

Performance-wise, the Radeon R9 380 4G should in theory be a lot better than the GeForce GT 340 in general. (explain)

Radeon R9 380 4G 182400 MB/sec
GeForce GT 340 54400 MB/sec
Difference: 128000 (235%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon R9 380 4G will be a lot (about 517%) faster with regards to texture filtering than the GeForce GT 340. (explain)

Radeon R9 380 4G 108640 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GT 340 17600 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 91040 (517%)

Pixel Rate

If running with lots of anti-aliasing is important to you, then the Radeon R9 380 4G is a better choice, by far. (explain)

Radeon R9 380 4G 31040 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GT 340 4400 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 26640 (605%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the max amount of data (in units of MB per second) that can be moved past the external memory interface in a second. It is calculated by multiplying the bus width by the speed of its memory. If the card has DDR type RAM, it must be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are processed per second. This number is worked out by multiplying the total texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the video card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels the graphics card could possibly write to its local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is worked out by multiplying the number of Render Output Units by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel rate also depends on lots of other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the maximum fill rate.
