Radeon HD 6950 vs Radeon R7 370 4G

Intro

The Radeon HD 6950 comes with clock speeds of 800 MHz on the GPU, and 1250 MHz on the 1024 MB of GDDR5 RAM. It features 1408 SPUs along with 88 Texture Address Units and 32 ROPs.

Compare that to the Radeon R7 370 4G, which uses a 28 nm design. AMD has clocked the core frequency at 975 MHz. The GDDR5 memory is set to run at a speed of 1400 MHz on this specific model. It features 1024 SPUs as well as 64 TAUs and 32 ROPs.

Radeon HD 6950 200 Watts
Difference: 90 Watts (82%)

Memory Bandwidth

As far as performance goes, the Radeon R7 370 4G should in theory be a little bit superior to the Radeon HD 6950 in general. (explain)

Radeon R7 370 4G 179200 MB/sec
Radeon HD 6950 160000 MB/sec
Difference: 19200 (12%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon HD 6950 will be a bit (approximately 13%) more effective at AF than the Radeon R7 370 4G. (explain)

Radeon HD 6950 70400 Mtexels/sec
Radeon R7 370 4G 62400 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 8000 (13%)

Pixel Rate

If running with lots of anti-aliasing is important to you, then the Radeon R7 370 4G is superior to the Radeon HD 6950, by far. (explain)

Radeon R7 370 4G 31200 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 6950 25600 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 5600 (22%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the max amount of information (measured in MB per second) that can be transferred across the external memory interface within a second. It is calculated by multiplying the interface width by the speed of its memory. If it uses DDR memory, it should be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the bandwidth is, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that can be applied per second. This figure is calculated by multiplying the total number of texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the graphics card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels that the graphics card can possibly write to the local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is calculated by multiplying the number of ROPs by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel fill rate also depends on lots of other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the max fill rate.
