GeForce 8600 GT 1GB GDDR3 vs Radeon R9 Fury X

Intro

The GeForce 8600 GT 1GB GDDR3 comes with clock speeds of 540 MHz on the GPU, and 700 MHz on the 1024 MB of GDDR3 memory. It features 32 SPUs as well as 16 TAUs and 8 ROPs.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon R9 Fury X, which uses a 28 nm design. AMD has set the core speed at 1050 MHz. The HBM RAM runs at a frequency of 500 MHz on this particular card. It features 4096 SPUs as well as 256 Texture Address Units and 64 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

GeForce 8600 GT 1GB GDDR3 47 Watts
Radeon R9 Fury X 275 Watts
Difference: 228 Watts (485%)

Memory Bandwidth

Performance-wise, the Radeon R9 Fury X should in theory be quite a bit better than the GeForce 8600 GT 1GB GDDR3 in general. (explain)

Radeon R9 Fury X 512000 MB/sec
GeForce 8600 GT 1GB GDDR3 22400 MB/sec
Difference: 489600 (2186%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon R9 Fury X is quite a bit (more or less 3011%) better at texture filtering than the GeForce 8600 GT 1GB GDDR3. (explain)

Radeon R9 Fury X 268800 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 8600 GT 1GB GDDR3 8640 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 260160 (3011%)

Pixel Rate

If using a high screen resolution is important to you, then the Radeon R9 Fury X is a better choice, and very much so. (explain)

Radeon R9 Fury X 67200 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 8600 GT 1GB GDDR3 4320 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 62880 (1456%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the maximum amount of data (in units of megabytes per second) that can be moved over the external memory interface in a second. It's worked out by multiplying the card's bus width by the speed of its memory. If the card has DDR type RAM, it should be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the card's memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that can be applied in one second. This figure is worked out by multiplying the total amount of texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels that the graphics card could possibly write to the local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is worked out by multiplying the amount of Render Output Units by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel fill rate is also dependant on lots of other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the max fill rate.
