Radeon HD 4870 2GB vs Radeon R9 Fury X

Intro

The Radeon HD 4870 2GB comes with a core clock frequency of 750 MHz and a GDDR5 memory frequency of 900 MHz. It also features a 256-bit bus, and uses a 55 nm design. It is comprised of 800(160x5) SPUs, 40 TAUs, and 16 ROPs.

Compare all of that to the Radeon R9 Fury X, which has GPU core speed of 1050 MHz, and 4096 MB of HBM memory set to run at 500 MHz through a 4096-bit bus. It also is comprised of 4096 Stream Processors, 256 TAUs, and 64 ROPs.

Radeon HD 4870 2GB 150 Watts
Radeon R9 Fury X 275 Watts
Difference: 125 Watts (83%)

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically, the Radeon R9 Fury X should perform a lot faster than the Radeon HD 4870 2GB overall. (explain)

Radeon R9 Fury X 512000 MB/sec
Radeon HD 4870 2GB 115200 MB/sec
Difference: 396800 (344%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon R9 Fury X should be quite a bit (more or less 796%) better at texture filtering than the Radeon HD 4870 2GB. (explain)

Radeon R9 Fury X 268800 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 4870 2GB 30000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 238800 (796%)

Pixel Rate

If using high levels of AA is important to you, then the Radeon R9 Fury X is a better choice, by far. (explain)

Radeon R9 Fury X 67200 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 4870 2GB 12000 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 55200 (460%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the maximum amount of data (counted in megabytes per second) that can be moved past the external memory interface in one second. The number is worked out by multiplying the interface width by its memory speed. If the card has DDR RAM, it should be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the bandwidth is, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that can be applied in one second. This figure is calculated by multiplying the total texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels the video card can possibly write to the local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is calculated by multiplying the number of Render Output Units by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel fill rate is also dependant on many other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the max fill rate.
