GeForce GTX 750 Ti vs Radeon HD 5450

Intro

The GeForce GTX 750 Ti makes use of a 28 nm design. nVidia has set the core speed at 1020 MHz. The GDDR5 RAM is set to run at a frequency of 1350 MHz on this specific card. It features 640 SPUs as well as 40 TAUs and 16 ROPs.

Compare all of that to the Radeon HD 5450, which has clock speeds of 650 MHz on the GPU, and 800 MHz on the 512 MB of DDR3 memory. It features 80(16x5) SPUs as well as 8 Texture Address Units and 4 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

Radeon HD 5450 19 Watts
GeForce GTX 750 Ti 60 Watts
Difference: 41 Watts (216%)

Memory Bandwidth

The GeForce GTX 750 Ti, in theory, should be quite a bit faster than the Radeon HD 5450 overall. (explain)

GeForce GTX 750 Ti 86400 MB/sec
Radeon HD 5450 12800 MB/sec
Difference: 73600 (575%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GTX 750 Ti is quite a bit (approximately 685%) more effective at texture filtering than the Radeon HD 5450. (explain)

GeForce GTX 750 Ti 40800 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 5450 5200 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 35600 (685%)

Pixel Rate

If running with a high resolution is important to you, then the GeForce GTX 750 Ti is the winner, and very much so. (explain)

GeForce GTX 750 Ti 16320 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 5450 2600 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 13720 (528%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the maximum amount of information (counted in megabytes per second) that can be transferred past the external memory interface in a second. The number is worked out by multiplying the bus width by its memory speed. If the card has DDR memory, it must be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the card's memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are processed in one second. This number is calculated by multiplying the total amount of texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the video card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels the graphics card can possibly write to its local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is worked out by multiplying the amount of Render Output Units by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel rate is also dependant on lots of other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the max fill rate.
