Radeon HD 5670 vs Radeon R7 250X 2GB

Intro

The Radeon HD 5670 comes with a GPU core speed of 775 MHz, and the 1024 MB of GDDR5 memory runs at 1000 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also features 400(80x5) SPUs, 20 TAUs, and 8 ROPs.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon R7 250X 2GB, which features a core clock speed of 1000 MHz and a GDDR5 memory frequency of 1125 MHz. It also features a 128-bit memory bus, and makes use of a 28 nm design. It is comprised of 640 SPUs, 40 TAUs, and 16 Raster Operation Units.

Radeon R7 250X 2GB 95 Watts
Difference: 34 Watts (56%)

Memory Bandwidth

Performance-wise, the Radeon R7 250X 2GB should in theory be a bit better than the Radeon HD 5670 overall. (explain)

Radeon R7 250X 2GB 72000 MB/sec
Radeon HD 5670 64000 MB/sec
Difference: 8000 (13%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon R7 250X 2GB will be much (about 158%) better at AF than the Radeon HD 5670. (explain)

Radeon R7 250X 2GB 40000 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 5670 15500 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 24500 (158%)

Pixel Rate

If running with lots of anti-aliasing is important to you, then the Radeon R7 250X 2GB is a better choice, by far. (explain)

Radeon R7 250X 2GB 16000 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 5670 6200 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 9800 (158%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the maximum amount of information (in units of MB per second) that can be transferred past the external memory interface in a second. The number is worked out by multiplying the card's interface width by its memory clock speed. If the card has DDR type memory, it must be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that can be processed per second. This figure is worked out by multiplying the total number of texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the graphics card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels the video card could possibly record to the local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is calculated by multiplying the number of ROPs by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel output rate is also dependant on quite a few other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the maximum fill rate.
