Radeon HD 3690/3830 vs Radeon R7 250X

Intro

The Radeon HD 3690/3830 has a GPU core clock speed of 668 MHz, and the 256 MB of GDDR3 RAM runs at 828 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also features 320(64x5) SPUs, 16 Texture Address Units, and 16 Raster Operation Units.

Compare all that to the Radeon R7 250X, which features a core clock frequency of 1000 MHz and a GDDR5 memory frequency of 1125 MHz. It also features a 128-bit bus, and uses a 28 nm design. It features 640 SPUs, 40 TAUs, and 16 Raster Operation Units.

Radeon HD 3690/3830 75 Watts
Radeon R7 250X 95 Watts
Difference: 20 Watts (27%)

Memory Bandwidth

As far as performance goes, the Radeon R7 250X should theoretically be quite a bit better than the Radeon HD 3690/3830 in general. (explain)

Radeon R7 250X 72000 MB/sec
Radeon HD 3690/3830 26496 MB/sec
Difference: 45504 (172%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon R7 250X should be a lot (about 274%) more effective at texture filtering than the Radeon HD 3690/3830. (explain)

Radeon R7 250X 40000 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 3690/3830 10688 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 29312 (274%)

Pixel Rate

If using high levels of AA is important to you, then the Radeon R7 250X is superior to the Radeon HD 3690/3830, and very much so. (explain)

Radeon R7 250X 16000 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 3690/3830 10688 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 5312 (50%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the maximum amount of information (in units of MB per second) that can be transferred across the external memory interface within a second. It is calculated by multiplying the card's interface width by its memory clock speed. If it uses DDR RAM, the result should be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the bandwidth is, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are processed per second. This number is worked out by multiplying the total number of texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels that the graphics chip could possibly record to the local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is calculated by multiplying the number of ROPs by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel output rate is also dependant on many other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the max fill rate.
