GeForce GT 130 vs Radeon R9 270

Intro

The GeForce GT 130 comes with core clock speeds of 500 MHz on the GPU, and 250 MHz on the 768 MB of DDR2 memory. It features 48 SPUs along with 24 TAUs and 16 ROPs.

Compare that to the Radeon R9 270, which has GPU clock speed of 900 MHz, and 2048 MB of GDDR5 memory set to run at 1400 MHz through a 256-bit bus. It also is comprised of 1280 SPUs, 80 TAUs, and 32 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

GeForce GT 130 75 Watts
Radeon R9 270 150 Watts
Difference: 75 Watts (100%)

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the Radeon R9 270 should be quite a bit faster than the GeForce GT 130 in general. (explain)

Radeon R9 270 179200 MB/sec
GeForce GT 130 12000 MB/sec
Difference: 167200 (1393%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon R9 270 should be a lot (approximately 500%) better at texture filtering than the GeForce GT 130. (explain)

Radeon R9 270 72000 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GT 130 12000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 60000 (500%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon R9 270 should be much (about 260%) better at full screen anti-aliasing than the GeForce GT 130, and also should be capable of handling higher screen resolutions more effectively. (explain)

Radeon R9 270 28800 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GT 130 8000 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 20800 (260%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the max amount of data (counted in MB per second) that can be moved over the external memory interface in one second. It's calculated by multiplying the card's bus width by its memory clock speed. If the card has DDR RAM, it must be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the bandwidth is, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that are processed in one second. This is calculated by multiplying the total amount of texture units by the core speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the graphics card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels that the graphics chip can possibly record to the local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is worked out by multiplying the amount of Raster Operations Pipelines by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel rate also depends on quite a few other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the maximum fill rate.
