Radeon HD 7870 XT vs Radeon R9 280X

Intro

The Radeon HD 7870 XT features clock speeds of 925 MHz on the GPU, and 1500 MHz on the 2048 MB of GDDR5 memory. It features 1536 SPUs along with 96 TAUs and 32 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon R9 280X, which makes use of a 28 nm design. AMD has set the core frequency at 850 MHz. The GDDR5 memory runs at a speed of 1500 MHz on this particular model. It features 2048 SPUs along with 128 TAUs and 32 Rasterization Operator Units.

Radeon HD 7870 XT 192000 MB/sec
Difference: 96000 (50%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon R9 280X will be quite a bit (more or less 23%) more effective at AF than the Radeon HD 7870 XT. (explain)

Radeon R9 280X 108800 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 7870 XT 88800 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 20000 (23%)

Pixel Rate

If running with high levels of AA is important to you, then the Radeon HD 7870 XT is superior to the Radeon R9 280X, though not by far. (explain)

Radeon HD 7870 XT 29600 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R9 280X 27200 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 2400 (9%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the max amount of data (counted in MB per second) that can be transferred over the external memory interface within a second. The number is worked out by multiplying the card's interface width by its memory speed. In the case of DDR memory, it should be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the bandwidth is, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that can be processed in one second. This figure is calculated by multiplying the total amount of texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels that the graphics card can possibly record to its local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is calculated by multiplying the amount of ROPs by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel output rate also depends on quite a few other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the maximum fill rate.
