Radeon HD 4770 vs Radeon R9 270X

Intro

The Radeon HD 4770 features core speeds of 750 MHz on the GPU, and 800 MHz on the 512 MB of GDDR5 RAM. It features 640(128x5) SPUs as well as 32 TAUs and 16 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon R9 270X, which comes with GPU core speed of 1000 MHz, and 2048 MB of GDDR5 RAM running at 1400 MHz through a 256-bit bus. It also features 1280 Stream Processors, 80 TAUs, and 32 Raster Operation Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

Radeon HD 4770 80 Watts
Radeon R9 270X 180 Watts
Difference: 100 Watts (125%)

Memory Bandwidth

As far as performance goes, the Radeon R9 270X should theoretically be a lot superior to the Radeon HD 4770 in general. (explain)

Radeon R9 270X 179200 MB/sec
Radeon HD 4770 51200 MB/sec
Difference: 128000 (250%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon R9 270X will be quite a bit (approximately 233%) more effective at AF than the Radeon HD 4770. (explain)

Radeon R9 270X 80000 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 4770 24000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 56000 (233%)

Pixel Rate

If running with lots of anti-aliasing is important to you, then the Radeon R9 270X is the winner, by far. (explain)

Radeon R9 270X 32000 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 4770 12000 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 20000 (167%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the max amount of information (counted in megabytes per second) that can be transferred over the external memory interface in a second. It's worked out by multiplying the card's bus width by the speed of its memory. If the card has DDR RAM, it must be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the card's memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that can be processed per second. This number is calculated by multiplying the total amount of texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the graphics card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels that the graphics chip can possibly record to its local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is worked out by multiplying the amount of ROPs by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel fill rate also depends on quite a few other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the max fill rate.
