Radeon HD 3650 vs Radeon HD 5670

Intro

The Radeon HD 3650 features core speeds of 725 MHz on the GPU, and 800 MHz on the 1024 MB of GDDR4 RAM. It features 120(24x5) SPUs as well as 8 Texture Address Units and 4 ROPs.

Compare those specs to the Radeon HD 5670, which has core clock speeds of 775 MHz on the GPU, and 1000 MHz on the 1024 MB of GDDR5 RAM. It features 400(80x5) SPUs as well as 20 TAUs and 8 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

Radeon HD 5670 61 Watts
Radeon HD 3650 78 Watts
Difference: 17 Watts (28%)

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the Radeon HD 5670 is 150% faster than the Radeon HD 3650 overall, due to its greater bandwidth. (explain)

Radeon HD 5670 64000 MB/sec
Radeon HD 3650 25600 MB/sec
Difference: 38400 (150%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon HD 5670 should be a lot (approximately 167%) faster with regards to AF than the Radeon HD 3650. (explain)

Radeon HD 5670 15500 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 3650 5800 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 9700 (167%)

Pixel Rate

If running with lots of anti-aliasing is important to you, then the Radeon HD 5670 is a better choice, by far. (explain)

Radeon HD 5670 6200 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 3650 2900 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 3300 (114%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the maximum amount of data (measured in MB per second) that can be moved across the external memory interface within a second. It is calculated by multiplying the card's interface width by the speed of its memory. If the card has DDR memory, it must be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that are applied in one second. This is calculated by multiplying the total number of texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels the video card can possibly record to the local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is worked out by multiplying the amount of ROPs by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel output rate is also dependant on quite a few other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the max fill rate.
