Geforce GTX 760 vs Radeon HD 7950 3GB

Intro

The Geforce GTX 760 has a GPU clock speed of 980 MHz, and the 2048 MB of GDDR5 memory is set to run at 1502 MHz through a 256-bit bus. It also is comprised of 1152 SPUs, 96 Texture Address Units, and 32 Raster Operation Units.

Compare that to the Radeon HD 7950 3GB, which comes with core speeds of 800 MHz on the GPU, and 1250 MHz on the 3072 MB of GDDR5 RAM. It features 1792 SPUs as well as 112 TAUs and 32 Rasterization Operator Units.

Geforce GTX 760 170 Watts
Radeon HD 7950 3GB 200 Watts
Difference: 30 Watts (18%)

Memory Bandwidth

The Radeon HD 7950 3GB, in theory, should perform much faster than the Geforce GTX 760 overall. (explain)

Radeon HD 7950 3GB 240000 MB/sec
Geforce GTX 760 192256 MB/sec
Difference: 47744 (25%)

Texel Rate

The Geforce GTX 760 will be a bit (more or less 5%) faster with regards to anisotropic filtering than the Radeon HD 7950 3GB. (explain)

Geforce GTX 760 94080 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 7950 3GB 89600 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 4480 (5%)

Pixel Rate

The Geforce GTX 760 should be quite a bit (approximately 23%) faster with regards to AA than the Radeon HD 7950 3GB, and also will be able to handle higher resolutions more effectively. (explain)

Geforce GTX 760 31360 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 7950 3GB 25600 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 5760 (23%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the largest amount of information (counted in MB per second) that can be transported over the external memory interface within a second. It's worked out by multiplying the card's bus width by its memory speed. If it uses DDR memory, the result should be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the bandwidth is, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that can be applied per second. This number is calculated by multiplying the total amount of texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels the graphics card can possibly record to the local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is calculated by multiplying the number of colour ROPs by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel fill rate is also dependant on quite a few other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the maximum fill rate.

amd PENETRATES everything

Jack Black says:

Jesus, look how behind the times compared with the 7950 the 760 is. The 7950 still beats it in IRL, even 18 months on...

Jack Black smells says:

The 760 is a newer card than the 7950. What are you talking about?

james adkins says:

actually... in real world tests, the 760 would outperform a 7950 by a few fps just because of the nvidia drivers... if mantle was included in every game however, then the amd card would win..... i own an xfx radeon hd 7950, and i can say, it is a good card, but nothing compared to nvidia cards
