Geforce GTX 770 vs Radeon HD 6950 2GB

Intro

The Geforce GTX 770 uses a 28 nm design. nVidia has set the core frequency at 1046 MHz. The GDDR5 memory is set to run at a speed of 1753 MHz on this particular card. It features 1536 SPUs along with 128 Texture Address Units and 32 ROPs.

Compare those specs to the Radeon HD 6950 2GB, which comes with core clock speeds of 800 MHz on the GPU, and 1250 MHz on the 2048 MB of GDDR5 memory. It features 1408 SPUs as well as 88 TAUs and 32 ROPs.

Radeon HD 6950 2GB 200 Watts
Geforce GTX 770 230 Watts
Difference: 30 Watts (15%)

Memory Bandwidth

As far as performance goes, the Geforce GTX 770 should in theory be quite a bit superior to the Radeon HD 6950 2GB in general. (explain)

Geforce GTX 770 224384 MB/sec
Radeon HD 6950 2GB 160000 MB/sec
Difference: 64384 (40%)

Texel Rate

The Geforce GTX 770 should be quite a bit (about 90%) faster with regards to AF than the Radeon HD 6950 2GB. (explain)

Geforce GTX 770 133888 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 6950 2GB 70400 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 63488 (90%)

Pixel Rate

If using a high resolution is important to you, then the Geforce GTX 770 is a better choice, by a large margin. (explain)

Geforce GTX 770 33472 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 6950 2GB 25600 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 7872 (31%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the largest amount of data (measured in MB per second) that can be moved over the external memory interface within a second. It is calculated by multiplying the interface width by the speed of its memory. In the case of DDR memory, it should be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that can be applied in one second. This number is calculated by multiplying the total number of texture units by the core speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the graphics card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels the video card could possibly record to its local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is worked out by multiplying the number of colour ROPs by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel rate is also dependant on quite a few other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the max fill rate.
