Radeon HD 5770 vs Radeon HD 5830

Intro

The Radeon HD 5770 features a GPU core clock speed of 850 MHz, and the 1024 MB of GDDR5 memory runs at 1200 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also is comprised of 800(160x5) SPUs, 40 TAUs, and 16 ROPs.

Compare that to the Radeon HD 5830, which features GPU clock speed of 800 MHz, and 1024 MB of GDDR5 RAM running at 1000 MHz through a 256-bit bus. It also features 1120(224x5) SPUs, 56 Texture Address Units, and 16 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

Radeon HD 5770 108 Watts
Radeon HD 5830 175 Watts
Difference: 67 Watts (62%)

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically speaking, the Radeon HD 5830 is 67% faster than the Radeon HD 5770 overall, because of its higher data rate. (explain)

Radeon HD 5830 128000 MB/sec
Radeon HD 5770 76800 MB/sec
Difference: 51200 (67%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon HD 5830 is a lot (about 32%) faster with regards to AF than the Radeon HD 5770. (explain)

Radeon HD 5830 44800 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 5770 34000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 10800 (32%)

Pixel Rate

If using a high resolution is important to you, then the Radeon HD 5770 is superior to the Radeon HD 5830, but only just. (explain)

Radeon HD 5770 13600 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 5830 12800 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 800 (6%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the max amount of information (measured in megabytes per second) that can be transferred past the external memory interface within a second. It is calculated by multiplying the interface width by its memory clock speed. In the case of DDR type RAM, it should be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the bandwidth is, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that can be processed in one second. This is calculated by multiplying the total number of texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the graphics card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels the graphics card can possibly write to the local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is worked out by multiplying the number of Render Output Units by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel output rate is also dependant on many other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the max fill rate.
