GeForce GTS 450 vs GeForce GTX 650

Intro

The GeForce GTS 450 has a GPU core clock speed of 783 MHz, and the 512 MB of GDDR5 RAM runs at 902 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also is made up of 192 Stream Processors, 32 Texture Address Units, and 16 Raster Operation Units.

Compare all of that to the GeForce GTX 650, which uses a 28 nm design. nVidia has set the core speed at 1058 MHz. The GDDR5 memory works at a frequency of 1250 MHz on this specific card. It features 384 SPUs as well as 32 TAUs and 16 Rasterization Operator Units.

Benchmarks

These are real-world performance benchmarks that were submitted by Hardware Compare users. The scores seen here are the average of all benchmarks submitted for each respective test and hardware.

3DMark Fire Strike Graphics Score

GeForce GTX 650 2263 points
GeForce GTS 450 1453 points
Difference: 810 (56%)

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

GeForce GTX 650 64 Watts
GeForce GTS 450 106 Watts
Difference: 42 Watts (66%)

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically speaking, the GeForce GTX 650 is 39% faster than the GeForce GTS 450 overall, because of its higher data rate. (explain)

GeForce GTX 650 80000 MB/sec
GeForce GTS 450 57728 MB/sec
Difference: 22272 (39%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GTX 650 will be a lot (approximately 35%) better at texture filtering than the GeForce GTS 450. (explain)

GeForce GTX 650 33856 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GTS 450 25056 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 8800 (35%)

Pixel Rate

If running with a high resolution is important to you, then the GeForce GTX 650 is the winner, by far. (explain)

GeForce GTX 650 16928 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GTS 450 12528 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 4400 (35%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the largest amount of information (counted in MB per second) that can be transported over the external memory interface within a second. The number is calculated by multiplying the card's bus width by the speed of its memory. If it uses DDR memory, it must be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the card's memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that can be applied in one second. This figure is calculated by multiplying the total amount of texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the graphics card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels that the graphics chip could possibly write to the local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is calculated by multiplying the number of Raster Operations Pipelines by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel output rate also depends on lots of other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the max fill rate.

Best Single Slot Video Card? - Hardware Canucks says:

[...] GeForce GTS 450 vs GeForce GTX 650 – Performance Comparison Benchmarks @ Hardware Compare Or a 640 would be very close to the performance of a GTS 450 i think! those cards are around 100$ and 80$... I would really recommend a 650 or a 640,new technology! and they are small. You are right, the 6750 is about the same performance...But well it's not a super new card :/ [...]
