GeForce GTX 550 Ti vs GeForce GTX 650

Intro

The GeForce GTX 550 Ti uses a 40 nm design. nVidia has clocked the core speed at 900 MHz. The GDDR5 RAM works at a frequency of 1026 MHz on this particular card. It features 192 SPUs as well as 32 TAUs and 24 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare those specs to the GeForce GTX 650, which comes with GPU core speed of 1058 MHz, and 1024 MB of GDDR5 memory set to run at 1250 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also is comprised of 384 SPUs, 32 TAUs, and 16 ROPs.

Benchmarks

These are real-world performance benchmarks that were submitted by Hardware Compare users. The scores seen here are the average of all benchmarks submitted for each respective test and hardware.

3DMark Fire Strike Graphics Score

GeForce GTX 650 2263 points
GeForce GTX 550 Ti 1897 points
Difference: 366 (19%)

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

GeForce GTX 650 64 Watts
GeForce GTX 550 Ti 116 Watts
Difference: 52 Watts (81%)

Memory Bandwidth

The GeForce GTX 550 Ti, in theory, should perform a lot faster than the GeForce GTX 650 in general. (explain)

GeForce GTX 550 Ti 98496 MB/sec
GeForce GTX 650 80000 MB/sec
Difference: 18496 (23%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GTX 650 will be just a bit (approximately 18%) more effective at AF than the GeForce GTX 550 Ti. (explain)

GeForce GTX 650 33856 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GTX 550 Ti 28800 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 5056 (18%)

Pixel Rate

The GeForce GTX 550 Ti should be much (more or less 28%) faster with regards to full screen anti-aliasing than the GeForce GTX 650, and also able to handle higher screen resolutions without losing too much performance. (explain)

GeForce GTX 550 Ti 21600 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GTX 650 16928 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 4672 (28%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the largest amount of information (counted in MB per second) that can be moved past the external memory interface in a second. It is calculated by multiplying the interface width by its memory speed. In the case of DDR type memory, it must be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the card's memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are applied per second. This is worked out by multiplying the total texture units by the core speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the graphics card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels the graphics card can possibly record to its local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is calculated by multiplying the number of colour ROPs by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel fill rate is also dependant on many other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the max fill rate.

I'm not sure about the increase of the performance from the GTX 550 Ti to GTX 650

Med Ali says:

even for me increase of performances between the 650 and 550ti are only in the Unified Shaders and the texel rate.

Rcoil says:

If you look at the following link http://www.geforce.com/Active/en_US/shared/images/products/shared/lineup.png just a little bit different. and even then only in synthetic benchmarks. not the real game.

Kirvic says:

Hi, what about video edition, which one is better to work for example in Adobe Premiere Pro CS6? or After Effects?

RODRIGO KELLY SILVA DE MATTOS says:

If you note, the power consumption of 650 is lower than the 550 ti, so you dont have to buy a great energy source!

jhon says:

gtx550ti has pci 2.0 and its 1gb its power consumation is higher .while gtx65 has 3.0 pci and its 2gb and power consumation is lower. if u really want to buy 192bits then it is better to buy 256bits.

Hannes says:

550ti is better for me texel memorry and pixel rate Hannes

edin says:

i play all games with high AF on my HD 6670 1gb ddr5, but i cant play new games on 1080p,only low to medium detail and off Anti Alaising, so beter card is the one that can play 1080p without lag, in this case gtx 550ti with bigger pixel rate

tarun says:

but gtx 650 can give good gaming performance than gtx 550ti

john says:

yes GTX 650 GDDR5 is 20% faster than GTX 550TI GTX 650 run with 64 W but GTX 550 ti need 116W so low power high performance
