GeForce GTX 650 vs GeForce GTX 660

Intro

The GeForce GTX 650 comes with a GPU core speed of 1058 MHz, and the 1024 MB of GDDR5 memory runs at 1250 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also is made up of 384 Stream Processors, 32 TAUs, and 16 Raster Operation Units.

Compare that to the GeForce GTX 660, which makes use of a 28 nm design. nVidia has set the core speed at 980 MHz. The GDDR5 memory works at a frequency of 1502 MHz on this particular model. It features 960 SPUs as well as 80 Texture Address Units and 24 Rasterization Operator Units.

GeForce GTX 660 5063 points
GeForce GTX 650 2263 points
Difference: 2800 (124%)

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

GeForce GTX 650 64 Watts
GeForce GTX 660 140 Watts
Difference: 76 Watts (119%)

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the GeForce GTX 660 should be quite a bit faster than the GeForce GTX 650 in general. (explain)

GeForce GTX 660 144192 MB/sec
GeForce GTX 650 80000 MB/sec
Difference: 64192 (80%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GTX 660 will be quite a bit (about 132%) better at AF than the GeForce GTX 650. (explain)

GeForce GTX 660 78400 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GTX 650 33856 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 44544 (132%)

Pixel Rate

If using high levels of AA is important to you, then the GeForce GTX 660 is superior to the GeForce GTX 650, by a large margin. (explain)

GeForce GTX 660 23520 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GTX 650 16928 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 6592 (39%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the maximum amount of information (measured in MB per second) that can be transferred across the external memory interface in a second. It is calculated by multiplying the card's interface width by its memory clock speed. If the card has DDR type memory, it must be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the card's memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are processed in one second. This is calculated by multiplying the total texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the video card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels the video card could possibly record to the local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is calculated by multiplying the amount of ROPs by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel fill rate also depends on quite a few other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the max fill rate.

Take it from someone who upgraded from a 9800gt to a GTX650 to a GTX660. The first upgrade was a slight improvement (rather disappointing in fact). But the jump from the 650 to the 660 was huge! Hello 1080 gaming!
