GeForce GTX 660 Ti vs Radeon HD 5870

Intro

The GeForce GTX 660 Ti features a clock speed of 915 MHz and a GDDR5 memory frequency of 1500 MHz. It also features a 192-bit bus, and makes use of a 28 nm design. It is made up of 1344 SPUs, 112 Texture Address Units, and 24 Raster Operation Units.

Compare those specs to the Radeon HD 5870, which comes with core clock speeds of 850 MHz on the GPU, and 1200 MHz on the 1024 MB of GDDR5 memory. It features 1600(320x5) SPUs along with 80 Texture Address Units and 32 Rasterization Operator Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

GeForce GTX 660 Ti 150 Watts
Radeon HD 5870 188 Watts
Difference: 38 Watts (25%)

Memory Bandwidth

As far as performance goes, the Radeon HD 5870 should in theory be just a bit better than the GeForce GTX 660 Ti overall. (explain)

Radeon HD 5870 153600 MB/sec
GeForce GTX 660 Ti 144000 MB/sec
Difference: 9600 (7%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GTX 660 Ti will be a lot (approximately 51%) better at AF than the Radeon HD 5870. (explain)

GeForce GTX 660 Ti 102480 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 5870 68000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 34480 (51%)

Pixel Rate

If using lots of anti-aliasing is important to you, then the Radeon HD 5870 is the winner, by far. (explain)

Radeon HD 5870 27200 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GTX 660 Ti 21960 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 5240 (24%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the maximum amount of information (counted in MB per second) that can be transferred past the external memory interface in a second. It's worked out by multiplying the bus width by the speed of its memory. In the case of DDR RAM, the result should be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the bandwidth is, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that are processed in one second. This number is calculated by multiplying the total amount of texture units by the core speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the graphics card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels that the graphics chip could possibly write to its local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is worked out by multiplying the number of Render Output Units by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel output rate is also dependant on many other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the max fill rate.

rodeon wins,,,its a monster and the graphics are good

larsV12 says:

@nyiko .. it does, and like so many of ATi cards of recent years, they're still able to compete against - and often better - the far newer tech' from NVIDIA of a the same / similar price bracket.

Just swapped my Sapphire 5870 for an Asus GTX 660 Ti to play Ark. Huge difference in terms of framerate.

5870: ran at 1280x1024 with everything on low to get 15-20 fps.

660 Ti: running 1600x1200, with most settings at medium or high, and I get a comfy 30+ fps.
