GeForce GT 240 GDDR5 1GB vs Radeon HD 3850 1GB

Intro

The GeForce GT 240 GDDR5 1GB has a GPU core speed of 550 MHz, and the 1024 MB of GDDR5 memory runs at 850 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also is made up of 96 SPUs, 32 TAUs, and 8 Raster Operation Units.

Compare that to the Radeon HD 3850 1GB, which comes with a core clock speed of 668 MHz and a GDDR3 memory frequency of 828 MHz. It also uses a 256-bit bus, and uses a 55 nm design. It is comprised of 320(64x5) SPUs, 16 Texture Address Units, and 16 Raster Operation Units.

Radeon HD 3850 1GB 75 Watts
Difference: 5 Watts (7%)

Memory Bandwidth

Performance-wise, the GeForce GT 240 GDDR5 1GB should in theory be a bit superior to the Radeon HD 3850 1GB in general. (explain)

GeForce GT 240 GDDR5 1GB 54400 MB/sec
Radeon HD 3850 1GB 52992 MB/sec
Difference: 1408 (3%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GT 240 GDDR5 1GB will be much (about 65%) faster with regards to anisotropic filtering than the Radeon HD 3850 1GB. (explain)

GeForce GT 240 GDDR5 1GB 17600 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 3850 1GB 10688 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 6912 (65%)

Pixel Rate

If running with high levels of AA is important to you, then the Radeon HD 3850 1GB is the winner, by far. (explain)

Radeon HD 3850 1GB 10688 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GT 240 GDDR5 1GB 4400 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 6288 (143%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the max amount of data (in units of megabytes per second) that can be moved over the external memory interface in one second. The number is worked out by multiplying the card's bus width by its memory clock speed. If it uses DDR type memory, the result should be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that can be processed per second. This figure is calculated by multiplying the total number of texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the video card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels that the graphics card can possibly record to its local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is calculated by multiplying the number of Render Output Units by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel output rate is also dependant on many other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the max fill rate.
