GeForce 9600 GT 1GB vs GeForce GT 640 DDR3

Intro

The GeForce 9600 GT 1GB uses a 65/55 nm design. nVidia has set the core frequency at 650 MHz. The GDDR3 memory is set to run at a frequency of 900 MHz on this particular model. It features 64 SPUs as well as 32 TAUs and 16 ROPs.

Compare those specs to the GeForce GT 640 DDR3, which features a core clock frequency of 900 MHz and a DDR3 memory speed of 1782 MHz. It also makes use of a 128-bit bus, and makes use of a 28 nm design. It features 384 SPUs, 32 Texture Address Units, and 16 Raster Operation Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

GeForce GT 640 DDR3 65 Watts
GeForce 9600 GT 1GB 95 Watts
Difference: 30 Watts (46%)

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically, the GeForce 9600 GT 1GB should perform a bit faster than the GeForce GT 640 DDR3 in general. (explain)

GeForce 9600 GT 1GB 57600 MB/sec
GeForce GT 640 DDR3 57024 MB/sec
Difference: 576 (1%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GT 640 DDR3 should be quite a bit (approximately 38%) more effective at anisotropic filtering than the GeForce 9600 GT 1GB. (explain)

GeForce GT 640 DDR3 28800 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 9600 GT 1GB 20800 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 8000 (38%)

Pixel Rate

The GeForce GT 640 DDR3 is much (more or less 38%) more effective at AA than the GeForce 9600 GT 1GB, and will be able to handle higher resolutions while still performing well. (explain)

GeForce GT 640 DDR3 14400 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 9600 GT 1GB 10400 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 4000 (38%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the largest amount of data (in units of MB per second) that can be transferred past the external memory interface in one second. It's worked out by multiplying the interface width by its memory clock speed. If the card has DDR type memory, it should be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the bandwidth is, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that can be applied in one second. This number is worked out by multiplying the total texture units by the core speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the video card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels that the graphics card can possibly write to the local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is calculated by multiplying the amount of ROPs by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel rate also depends on many other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the maximum fill rate.

I have a 2009 Mac Book Pro that has a GT9600 graphics card. Comparing it to the newer GT640 I wondered if the difference in performance justified the expense in switching. Evidently not. I am mainly into digital graphics and beginning photography.

Na minha opiniao gt 640 e melhor no geral.
