GeForce GT 640 DDR3 vs Radeon HD 6670 (OEM) 1GB

Intro

The GeForce GT 640 DDR3 comes with a GPU core clock speed of 900 MHz, and the 2048 MB of DDR3 memory runs at 1782 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also is made up of 384 SPUs, 32 Texture Address Units, and 16 Raster Operation Units.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon HD 6670 (OEM) 1GB, which features GPU clock speed of 800 MHz, and 1024 MB of GDDR5 memory running at 1000 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also is made up of 480 SPUs, 24 TAUs, and 8 Raster Operation Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

Radeon HD 6670 (OEM) 1GB 63 Watts
GeForce GT 640 DDR3 65 Watts
Difference: 2 Watts (3%)

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically speaking, the Radeon HD 6670 (OEM) 1GB will be 12% quicker than the GeForce GT 640 DDR3 overall, because of its greater bandwidth. (explain)

Radeon HD 6670 (OEM) 1GB 64000 MB/sec
GeForce GT 640 DDR3 57024 MB/sec
Difference: 6976 (12%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GT 640 DDR3 should be a lot (approximately 50%) better at texture filtering than the Radeon HD 6670 (OEM) 1GB. (explain)

GeForce GT 640 DDR3 28800 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 6670 (OEM) 1GB 19200 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 9600 (50%)

Pixel Rate

If running with lots of anti-aliasing is important to you, then the GeForce GT 640 DDR3 is the winner, and very much so. (explain)

GeForce GT 640 DDR3 14400 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 6670 (OEM) 1GB 6400 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 8000 (125%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the maximum amount of information (counted in megabytes per second) that can be moved past the external memory interface in a second. It's worked out by multiplying the interface width by its memory clock speed. In the case of DDR type memory, it must be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the card's memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that are applied per second. This number is calculated by multiplying the total texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the graphics card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels that the graphics card could possibly record to its local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is worked out by multiplying the amount of Render Output Units by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel rate also depends on lots of other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the maximum fill rate.

naon says:

Is the memory for GT 640 as 1782MHz correct? I think the base memory speed is 891Mhz and the effective memory speed is 1782.

majid says:

well despite these results hd6670 performs well over all in games etc
