Compare any two graphics cards:
Geforce GTX 690 vs Radeon HD 5970
IntroThe Geforce GTX 690 makes use of a 28 nm design. nVidia has clocked the core speed at 915 MHz. The GDDR5 memory works at a frequency of 1502 MHz on this particular model. It features 1536 SPUs as well as 128 Texture Address Units and 32 ROPs.Compare all of that to the Radeon HD 5970, which uses a 40 nm design. AMD has clocked the core speed at 725 MHz. The GDDR5 memory is set to run at a frequency of 1000 MHz on this specific model. It features 1600 SPUs as well as 160 Texture Address Units and 64 Rasterization Operator Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical BenchmarksPower Consumption (Max TDP)
Memory BandwidthAs far as performance goes, the Geforce GTX 690 should in theory be much superior to the Radeon HD 5970 overall. (explain)
Texel RateThe Geforce GTX 690 is a little bit (about 1%) better at AF than the Radeon HD 5970. (explain)
Pixel RateIf running with high levels of AA is important to you, then the Radeon HD 5970 is superior to the Geforce GTX 690, and very much so. (explain)
Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit. One or more cards in this comparison are multi-core. This means that their bandwidth, texel and pixel rates are theoretically doubled - this does not mean the card will actually perform twice as fast, but only that it should in theory be able to. Actual game benchmarks will give a more accurate idea of what it's capable of. Price Comparison

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the maximum amount of information (counted in MB per second) that can be transferred across the external memory interface in a second. It's worked out by multiplying the bus width by the speed of its memory. If it uses DDR memory, it must be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the bandwidth is, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and higher screen resolutions. Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that can be processed per second. This is worked out by multiplying the total amount of texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed in a second. Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels that the graphics chip could possibly write to the local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is calculated by multiplying the amount of ROPs by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel output rate also depends on many other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the maximum fill rate.

27 Responses to “Geforce GTX 690 vs Radeon HD 5970”hahah i would still go with 5970
for such a old card the 5970 is still the king of anti-aliasing
LOL
Proof that we just can't compare two different chip architectures based on Shaders, Textures & ROP counts. I own a HD5970 btw. 😛
hwcompare gives wrong information about some cards, and you guys think ati is great. Just go to amd.com and see by yourself, the specs of 5970. gtx 690 is far better than 5970
I own a three year old HD 5970, the only graphic card that I ever had for more than a year, and used in the most barbaric ways (every kind of games and 3d modeling/rendering). So Mujeeb
HD 5970 was the KING, is the KING, and forever will be the KING. Tell me for another Hi-end GPU who crusht two nVidia generation, and made them skip one.
The specs for 5970 are doubled on this site. Its wrong, texel and pixel rate should be halfed.
Its completely impossible to consider 5970 to have 92800 and the 6990, having more clock being listed just as half.
There is an error:
Pixel fillrate is 46400 MPixel/sec (32 ROPs x 725 MHz = 23200 MPixels x2 GPUs = 46400 MPixel/sec).
Texture fillrate is 116000 MTexels/sec (80 TAUs x 725 MHz = 58000 MTexels/sec x2 GPUs = 116000 MTexels/sec).
Radeon 5970 is still price wise
there are some errors on the specs of 5970 in this site. gtx 690 is currently best in all. including bandwidth, texel, and pixel rates.
for those who think that Newest Nvidia card gtx690 is better than old ATI 5970 , GO FUCK YOURSELF !
690fuckforever!!!
hahaha all of this is just a theory so it means its true or false. but i think 690 is a beast because it has the latest technology
Poor Nvidia "Fansboys"
Hello All, just picked up a Evga Gtx 690 to replace my old heater the ATI 5970 and gave it to my son for his rig , I'm sorry guys but the GTx 690 is faster and a lot cooler than my Ati 5970 hemlock 2gig. Battlefield 3 with everything on ultra set at 1920 x 1200 no lag or shutter, smooth frame rates. But hell took a lot of reading and convincing to buy this 1000.00 dollar video card. I'm a gamer,
should be good for 3 more years. Oh the 5970 would overheat and crash my system time to time . No crashing or freezing up with the new video card.
for irishman
shoot up
I own a three year old HD 5970 and water cool system (heat only 50 °C full load). Card work nice batllefield 3 best grafic settings.
I own 5970 and it's a piece of shit. Heat 80-85 degree while gaming on stock hsf. And most game's don't support cfx well so it runs like shit, even worse than a single gpu card. Most games have negative cfx scaling and there is no way to turn the fucking shit off in the new amd drivers. Amd 5970 is an overrated piece of **** worst 500 I ever spent back in the day. Wish I just got a 5870 runs better 90% of the time I bet lol.
The ROG Asus Ares 1, 4gb 5970 can beat an overpriced 690 any day of the week, and if it is overclocked, it will beat the asus mars II, basically it is still the best card in the workd for multi monitor gaming, only second to its successor, the Asus ROG 7970x2 OC water cooled card, which destroys the 690, even when a 690 is liquid cooled and overclocked,
Amen!!! 5970 is the Bomb!
@WronWrongWrong: Maybe you should stop talking shit and buy a more efficient cooling system.
The 5970 is a high end no doubt
I will buy the HD 5970
@WrongWrongWrong ... what's the matter diddums? Mama not breastfeed you on time? Can you say, 'after market cooling solution'?? Besides the obvious fact the 5970 is just under 2 1/2 years older tech'. Make no bones about it though, the GTX 690 is a killer, top 'o the line GPU .. it just so happens the rapidly aging 5970 can *actually* compete with NVIDIA's Top, flagship GPU in a number of ways. That in itself is great merit to the ATi design team that put the put out the concept of the 5970 and then made it a reality.
GIB MIR DEIN GELD; SCATFRESSE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It was one of my big mistkes buy hd5970. Sorry GTX 690, you are better, much better.
Gtx690 is just plain better if you cant accept that then you are a fanboy. Ofcourse the hd5970 is a realy good card but you you should compare the gtx690 with the hd7990, not with its 4year older variant.
lol total error their the 5970 should be halved i wont deny its a great card but after owning one myself and then upgrading to a GTX 670 even though the 5970 still costs more the 670 outperforms it so i can easily assume the 690 would greattly outperform it
