Benchmarks

These are real-world performance benchmarks that were submitted by Hardware Compare users. The scores seen here are the average of all benchmarks submitted for each respective test and hardware.

3DMark Fire Strike Graphics Score

Geforce GTX 690 13111 points
Radeon HD 7970 8225 points
Difference: 4886 (59%)

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

Radeon HD 7970 250 Watts
Geforce GTX 690 300 Watts
Difference: 50 Watts (20%)

Memory Bandwidth

The Geforce GTX 690, in theory, should perform a lot faster than the Radeon HD 7970 in general. (explain)

Geforce GTX 690 384512 MB/sec
Radeon HD 7970 264000 MB/sec
Difference: 120512 (46%)

Texel Rate

The Geforce GTX 690 will be much (about 98%) more effective at texture filtering than the Radeon HD 7970. (explain)

Geforce GTX 690 234240 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 7970 118400 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 115840 (98%)

Pixel Rate

The Geforce GTX 690 should be quite a bit (about 98%) better at FSAA than the Radeon HD 7970, and should be able to handle higher resolutions while still performing well. (explain)

Geforce GTX 690 58560 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 7970 29600 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 28960 (98%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

One or more cards in this comparison are multi-core. This means that their bandwidth, texel and pixel rates are theoretically doubled - this does not mean the card will actually perform twice as fast, but only that it should in theory be able to. Actual game benchmarks will give a more accurate idea of what it's capable of.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the largest amount of information (in units of megabytes per second) that can be moved past the external memory interface within a second. It's worked out by multiplying the card's interface width by its memory clock speed. If it uses DDR memory, the result should be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the bandwidth is, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that can be processed per second. This number is calculated by multiplying the total amount of texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels that the graphics card can possibly record to its local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is worked out by multiplying the number of Raster Operations Pipelines by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel rate also depends on quite a few other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the max fill rate.

@ homepage 7970 placed on top but here 690 kicked 7970.why inaccurate details in homepage

po says:

On the front page it's got the exact same memory bandwidth as the GTX680, meaning they were only running the dual core GTX690 in single core mode, while the 7970 was using both cores for the result on the front page.

GTX 690 blew 7970 away. But, GTX 690 is also 1 thousand dollars, while the 7970 is around 500 dollars. So, the question is, do you want to spend a bunch of money for the best video card or spend half that money for, I think, the second or third best video card?

Z9 says:

couze 690's big price a HD 7970 will be much better....but if you try to over lock at 1550 the memory HD 7970 will be almost equal at fps...with a difference of 10-20 fps...
I don't think it's worth to give 500 dollars more....for 10-20 fps.

if you have enough money to buy even one 690 then seriously can we trade lives?
And pcpp recommend TWO in SLI as their beast 🙂
TOO MUCH AWESOME!!!

7990 will detonate 690

The 7970 x2 was announced... It's basically 2 7970's in a dual card gpu. It's about time AMD got some dual card gpu action going on.

It's kinda unfair, the GTX 690 Is a dual GPU, while the 7970 is just a single GPU, but given the price and the performance between the two, I certainly conclude that the Radeon was more better.

The GTX 690 is less powerful than the Powercolor Devil 13. with 2 GPU HD 7990! a ha!

AMDPC gamer says:

This comparison is not equal as the 7970 is not ATi's top card. The new ATi Radeon HD7990 would kill a GTX 690 as would the much older HD6990.

Stefan says:

yeah 7990 will detonate 690

nVidia the best

wow i love this graphic card

just GTX 690 \m/

onizine says:

So many fools with money to burn really have no clue about cost to performance ratio. 5 Hundred dollars for what? you can barely tell the difference. But I guess it's one of macho things. well put that card up against the fire-pro series and see or directcu II.

Pantelos says:

just take 780 ti close to 690 perfomance and 600$ 🙂
