GeForce GTX 260 Core 216 vs Geforce GTX 670

Intro

The GeForce GTX 260 Core 216 has a GPU core speed of 576 MHz, and the 896 MB of GDDR3 memory is set to run at 999 MHz through a 448-bit bus. It also features 216 SPUs, 72 TAUs, and 28 Raster Operation Units.

Compare those specs to the Geforce GTX 670, which has clock speeds of 915 MHz on the GPU, and 1500 MHz on the 2048 MB of GDDR5 memory. It features 1344 SPUs as well as 112 TAUs and 32 ROPs.

Geforce GTX 670 170 Watts
GeForce GTX 260 Core 216 202 Watts
Difference: 32 Watts (19%)

Memory Bandwidth

Performance-wise, the Geforce GTX 670 should in theory be a lot better than the GeForce GTX 260 Core 216 in general. (explain)

Geforce GTX 670 192000 MB/sec
GeForce GTX 260 Core 216 111888 MB/sec
Difference: 80112 (72%)

Texel Rate

The Geforce GTX 670 should be a lot (about 147%) better at texture filtering than the GeForce GTX 260 Core 216. (explain)

Geforce GTX 670 102480 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GTX 260 Core 216 41472 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 61008 (147%)

Pixel Rate

The Geforce GTX 670 should be quite a bit (approximately 82%) faster with regards to full screen anti-aliasing than the GeForce GTX 260 Core 216, and also capable of handling higher resolutions without losing too much performance. (explain)

Geforce GTX 670 29280 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GTX 260 Core 216 16128 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 13152 (82%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the largest amount of data (counted in megabytes per second) that can be transported across the external memory interface in one second. It is calculated by multiplying the bus width by its memory speed. If it uses DDR memory, it must be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that can be processed in one second. This number is calculated by multiplying the total texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels the video card can possibly write to its local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is calculated by multiplying the amount of colour ROPs by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel rate is also dependant on quite a few other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the max fill rate.
