Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

GeForce GT 315 52 Watts
Radeon HD 7770 80 Watts
Difference: 28 Watts (54%)

Memory Bandwidth

The Radeon HD 7770, in theory, should be much faster than the GeForce GT 315 in general. (explain)

Radeon HD 7770 72000 MB/sec
GeForce GT 315 25280 MB/sec
Difference: 46720 (185%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon HD 7770 will be quite a bit (approximately 300%) better at texture filtering than the GeForce GT 315. (explain)

Radeon HD 7770 40000 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GT 315 10000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 30000 (300%)

Pixel Rate

If using a high resolution is important to you, then the Radeon HD 7770 is a better choice, by a large margin. (explain)

Radeon HD 7770 16000 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GT 315 5000 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 11000 (220%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the maximum amount of data (in units of megabytes per second) that can be transferred past the external memory interface in one second. It is calculated by multiplying the bus width by the speed of its memory. If the card has DDR RAM, the result should be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the bandwidth is, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that can be applied in one second. This number is worked out by multiplying the total texture units by the core speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the video card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels that the graphics card could possibly write to its local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is calculated by multiplying the amount of Raster Operations Pipelines by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel fill rate also depends on many other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the max fill rate.
