Radeon HD 5670 vs Radeon HD 7770

Intro

The Radeon HD 5670 makes use of a 40 nm design. AMD has clocked the core frequency at 775 MHz. The GDDR5 memory runs at a speed of 1000 MHz on this model. It features 400(80x5) SPUs along with 20 Texture Address Units and 8 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare all of that to the Radeon HD 7770, which comes with GPU clock speed of 1000 MHz, and 1024 MB of GDDR5 RAM running at 1125 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also is made up of 640 Stream Processors, 40 Texture Address Units, and 16 Raster Operation Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

Radeon HD 5670 61 Watts
Radeon HD 7770 80 Watts
Difference: 19 Watts (31%)

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically, the Radeon HD 7770 should perform just a bit faster than the Radeon HD 5670 overall. (explain)

Radeon HD 7770 72000 MB/sec
Radeon HD 5670 64000 MB/sec
Difference: 8000 (13%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon HD 7770 will be quite a bit (approximately 158%) better at AF than the Radeon HD 5670. (explain)

Radeon HD 7770 40000 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 5670 15500 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 24500 (158%)

Pixel Rate

If running with high levels of AA is important to you, then the Radeon HD 7770 is a better choice, by a large margin. (explain)

Radeon HD 7770 16000 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 5670 6200 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 9800 (158%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the largest amount of information (measured in MB per second) that can be transferred over the external memory interface in a second. It's calculated by multiplying the card's interface width by its memory speed. If it uses DDR type memory, it must be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that are applied in one second. This number is calculated by multiplying the total texture units by the core speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the graphics card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels the graphics card can possibly record to its local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is calculated by multiplying the number of Raster Operations Pipelines by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel output rate is also dependant on lots of other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the maximum fill rate.
