GeForce GT 440 3GB vs Radeon HD 7770

Intro

The GeForce GT 440 3GB makes use of a 40 nm design. nVidia has set the core speed at 594 MHz. The GDDR3 memory works at a speed of 900 MHz on this particular model. It features 144 SPUs as well as 24 TAUs and 24 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare those specs to the Radeon HD 7770, which has a GPU core clock speed of 1000 MHz, and 1024 MB of GDDR5 RAM set to run at 1125 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also is comprised of 640 Stream Processors, 40 TAUs, and 16 Raster Operation Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

GeForce GT 440 3GB 56 Watts
Radeon HD 7770 80 Watts
Difference: 24 Watts (43%)

Memory Bandwidth

Performance-wise, the Radeon HD 7770 should theoretically be much better than the GeForce GT 440 3GB in general. (explain)

Radeon HD 7770 72000 MB/sec
GeForce GT 440 3GB 43200 MB/sec
Difference: 28800 (67%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon HD 7770 is much (approximately 181%) more effective at AF than the GeForce GT 440 3GB. (explain)

Radeon HD 7770 40000 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GT 440 3GB 14256 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 25744 (181%)

Pixel Rate

If using a high resolution is important to you, then the Radeon HD 7770 is a better choice, but only just. (explain)

Radeon HD 7770 16000 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GT 440 3GB 14256 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 1744 (12%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the maximum amount of information (counted in megabytes per second) that can be transferred past the external memory interface in one second. It's worked out by multiplying the interface width by its memory clock speed. If the card has DDR memory, it should be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that are processed in one second. This number is calculated by multiplying the total number of texture units by the core speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the graphics card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels that the graphics chip could possibly write to the local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is worked out by multiplying the number of ROPs by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel output rate also depends on lots of other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the max fill rate.
